You can save your family huge problems when you are unable to communicate your health care wishes by preparing an AHD before you are in that invidious position. But you can only prepare an AHD whilst you actually are in good health and have the capacity to understand what you are doing. It is a legal document which adult persons set out their decisions about what medical treatment they want and do not want. It is a conversation that should be had with ALL family members.
